An online learning environment for students looking for inspiration and IGCSE Biology exam success

Welcome to the hub!

Hi, I’m Amanda, I'm the founder of Sparking STEM and an award-winning Science educator (Outstanding Impact - STEAM Impact Awards 2026).

For fifteen years I've felt frustrated by a conflict between the skills needed to succeed in exams, and those needed for true biological thinking. I've seen expansive thinkers crushed by mark schemes, and creative biological passion dulled by rote memorisation.

I built the Inspire To Learn IGCSE Biology Hub, because you shouldn't have to choose between inspiration and exam success.

The hub combines the skills and tools needed to ace exams, with real world context, practical skill development and learning through deep understanding.

I’ve been teaching IGCSE Biology to home-educated students since 2017 and teaching Biology since I qualified as a Science teacher in 2010. I have a BSc in Zoology, an MSc in Applied Entomology and have worked in biological research as an earthworm ecotoxicologist and equine welfare researcher all over the world. I've  been training scientists since 2018.

My menagerie of weird and wonderful animals helps me to bring my teaching to life! I use real things, not slides, I show Biology in the real world and I incorporate opportunities for interaction at every turn. Everything I do is through zero pressure approaches and choice. I'm a SEND parent who understands neurodivergence and anxiety.

My aim is to inspire meaningful understanding, long term interest and love of biology, whilst teaching students to become skilled players of the exam game.

Inspirational and exam-focused

The Topic Pods tell a story through the whole curriculum, building a deep and integrated understanding of key biological processes and the connections between them whilst focusing continually on exam skills and techniques:

  • Connecting topics are taught together: Photosynthesis and respiration for example, which are traditionally taught far apart, are taught together at the beginning, connecting them through their fundamental role in energy cycling in biological systems. Learning becomes meaningful and relevant.

  • Learning is by relevance not memorisation: Topics that traditionally require memorisation, like the organelles of cell structure, are taught throughout when they're relevant. We learn about chloroplasts when we learn about photosynthesis for example. We learn about ribosomes when we learn about protein synthesis, and so on.

  • Fundamental processes are continually reinforced and connected: Photosynthesis, respiration, natural selection, organisational and cellular structure etc are continually linked throughout. Students gain deeper understanding and can more easily gain exam marks requiring joined up thinking between topics.

What do people say about learning with Amanda?

S

Sophie Beckerman

Amanda tutored my daughter for GCSE Biology. She made such fantastic progress that she went from a grade 3 to a grade 5 in just 3 months. More importantly, she learnt to love biology! Amanda enthuses and educates in equal measure and is gentle and kind in her approach. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Amanda puts care, hard work and dedication into Sparking STEM, always bringing different platforms for the children to learn, being outdoors in all weather, online sessions in the comfort of your home, practical science sessions in real lab settings or meeting real scientists. Sparking STEM brings all these different learning environments where children get inspiration from young age that they might have never come across if it wasn't for Amanda's commitment to sparking love for science.

You just 'get' home-ed, you accept it and don't judge, and that's quite rare for a provider who doesn't home-ed themselves. Your passion for making sure ALL the children can access learning shines through.

Exam Information

How does the hub support learning?

Alongside the live tuition / recordings and the four video libraries that grow week by week, the structure of the whole hub offers lots of opportunities for students to take effective notes and consolidate learning with exam question practice and guidance:

  • Each live session comes with a PDF (available in advance of the session) that includes information to support students with key word focused note-taking and suggested extension activities. You can see an example here.
  • Where relevant to aid learning, sessions will come with accompanying worksheets or diagrams to label. They'll be able to use the information in the live sessions and videos that week to help them.
  • Quizzes, interactions and consolidation activities support learning throughout the live sessions. In the community, students can ask and answer each others questions with regular support and clarification from Amanda.
  • In most of the Exam Skills videos that are added to the hub each week, the video will go through at least one exam question relevant to the tuition content or Practical Skills content that week. The question(s) and mark schemes will be provided also (where applicable), giving guidance on exam technique and walking through a worked example, as well as showing how to use the mark scheme to mark it. Students could either have a go at the question before watching the video and use it to improve / mark / correct their answer, or could simply follow the video to complete the question(s). Over the whole course, they could potentially build up a collection of around 75 or more completed exam questions whilst learning the skills and techniques to gain marks.
  • Many of the Maths Skills videos use exam questions in this way too.

Frequently asked questions

  • How does it work? An overview

You can join the hub any time, but to benefit from the live tuition and guidance through the journey you'd need to join at the beginning in April 2026.

To join the whole course live and benefit from week by week guidance in the community linked to the live learning and interactions during tuition you need to join in April 2026. The full course content (Core and Biology Only Edexcel IGCSE Biology, will be covered by November 2027.

Or you can join at any time and catch up with the recordings and videos added so far.

Each week there is a live tuition session on Zoom on Tuesdays 11.30-1pm, approximately term time only (see full programme and dates here), recordings are available in the hub afterwards, so you can catch up and follow the story through the Topic Pods at any time. Just bear in mind that by November 2027 there will be over around 100 hours of tuition in the hub, from just the live sessions!

Each week another video is added to each of the Exam Skills, Practical Skills, Biology Is Everywhere and Maths Skills video libraries, and associated exam questions and resources. These four video libraries grow week by week (52 weeks per year) to form searchable libraries, which by November 2027 will collectively offer over 300 videos to cover, guide and enrich the IGCSE Biology course content.

Whenever you join, and whichever pricing option you choose, you gain access to everything in the hub.

  • Which exam board is it suitable for?

The hub focuses on the Pearson Edexcel International Biology GCSE (IGCSE) specification (Linear).

Students studying other exam boards are likely to benefit from the hub for revision, supplementation or enrichment, but will not find the whole specification is covered in the hub.

Collectively by November 2027, all the components of the hub provide the full specification content for students studying

    • IGCSE Biology 4BI1 - Biology Papers 1 and 2, and those studying

    • Double Award IGCSE in Science 4SD0 - Biology Paper 1 (Note that Chemistry and Physics are not included in the hub)

Where content is relevant only to those students studying 4BI1 and not 4SD0 (given in bold in the specification), there may be additional live or recorded sessions offered occasionally specific for that content (you can see the details in the full programme below).

    Exam fees and registration

Please note that Sparking STEM is not an exam centre and cannot enter your child for exams, so you will need to make your own arrangements with a suitable exam centre. Exam fees are not included in hub membership.

  • Is it suitable for students studying for other exam boards?

The hub focuses on the Pearson Edexcel International Biology GCSE (IGCSE) specification (Linear).

Students studying other exam boards are likely to benefit from the hub for revision, supplementation or enrichment, but will not find everything they need for their specific exam board learning in the hub.

  • Can we join the hub any time?

Yes! Whenever you join the hub you will gain access to all the previous recordings and videos in the libraries so that you can catch up or complete the course according to your own timescale. You can join on a flexible monthly basis so that you can join and leave whenever you want, or you can purchase a 6 month or annual membership at a discounted rate.

  • What will we find in the hub?

Once you've join the hub, you'll be able to log in to your account where you'll see each of the six areas (Tuition, Practical Skills, Biology Is Everywhere, Exam Skills, Maths Skills and Community).

What you see in each of those areas depends on when you join, as new videos are added to each area on a week by week basis, to form searchable video libraries as your student is guided through the Topic Pods to complete the course (Oct 2027 completes all course content, see the full programme here).

If you first join at the beginning of the course in April 2026, to take part in the live sessions and be guided through the content week by week, you'll find a welcome video in each component, telling you how it all works. Each week a new video, or two, will appear in each area to form four searchable video libraries with over 300 videos altogether, as well as all the live tuition recordings.

  • How does live tuition work?

Live tuition takes place via Zoom on Tuesdays from 11.30am to 1pm with a short break approximately midway through.

Live sessions are approximately term time only, you can see the full schedule of provisional dates in the course programme here.

Recordings of the live sessions are available in the hub within approximately 24 hours for you to watch in your own time and at your own pace (student’s images are not shown in the videos)

All you need is a reliable internet connection and device to join. You may find that the best experience is on a larger screen (desktop) and through the Zoom Workplace App rather than the browser. You can download the app for free here.

  • What about accessibility?

I am a SEND parent and so I understand how anxiety and pressure can affect children who learn differently. I have designed everything with kindness and flexibility at its core. Students can engage in whatever way works best for them. There is no pressure to speak, perform, or answer questions on the spot. There are no countdown timers or sudden demands for responses. Children are invited into the learning rather than pushed.

All videos continuously show key learning points clearly written at the side of the screen, as well as the relevant section of the Edexcel specification.

These key words, concepts, phrases and learning points, that are most likely to get exam marks, can be used to make notes afterwards or to complete any accompanying resources provided, so that students can simply enjoy the video and focus on the content without worrying about writing things down as they watch.

Students can watch the videos to suit their learning style: All videos include captions and can be sped up or slowed down, paused and watched however many times they want. You have access to all available videos for as long as your hub subscription is active.

The video libraries can be searched by key word and exam specification index numbers so that you can find any available videos at any time to support and enrich, wherever you are in your IGCSE Biology journey.

  • How can I change membership plans?

To change membership plans, for example from monthly to annual membership, simply cancel your monthly subscription and purchase the new membership plan.

By logging into your account to purchase using the same email address and password, you will regain access to your same account and retain your progress markers.

Inspirational learning and exam success

It often seems that there's a compromise between the expansive, creative thinking that real biology involves, and the box-ticking, rote memorisation systems our exam framework promotes, but I've seen my students light up when they realise they can have both. When taught through inspiration, the language becomes a tool instead of a barrier. The beautiful, real-world connections in Biology help students to deeply understand biological processes. They can work out exam answers from basic principles, and more easily gain the exam marks available for spotting the links between topics. Taught alongside clear exam techniques and tools, they learn to frame their knowledge to get the marks, without losing the love of the subject. Most importantly, they see the purpose of learning biology. They understand how it connects to real life, explains their bodies and their world, and helps them make sense of their place on the planet. The hub is new, but it's the culmination of years of supporting students to bring these two things together so that they can love Biology and apply that knowledge successfully in the exam hall.
